Logo:

Our society is mostly to make the people’s lives easier. Not requiring SATs and ACTs in school can take off a lot of stress on high school students, and will also give students the opportunity to have more time for doing what they love. Studying for long periods of time for just one long test is stressful, and the only thing you get from it is a result telling you whether you pass or not. Prices of food and plane rides are reduced, as well as everyone getting free healthcare. It’s also required for them to learn about taxes and other things in adulthood to get them prepared and ready for the real world. We are to treat everyone with respect, no matter what religion, race, skin tone, etc. School is going to finish about 45 minutes earlier, leaving them with more time for their family and friends, as well as more time for homework. Tobacco, plastic bags, drinking and driving, and others are not allowed so there would be less car accidents, reuse our bags, and get rid of some of our air pollution.

The Merchant of Venice FINAL

People think we're in this world to live up to people's expectations and we all think each person has a specific label or status individually. Appearance takes a big part in defining a person's personality and worth. However, we should learn to trust not too much on appearances because what lies behind an appearance is usually another appearance. Like Bassanio, a kinsman and a dear friend to Antonio (the merchant of Venice) who wishes to to change into a different status or appearance to impress a wealthy lady from Belmont (named Portia. This play, also consists of a game of choosing caskets that contains an item that is opposite from the appearance and worth of each casket, and the winner would get to marry the wealthy lady, Portia. It also includes other characters that have different appearances, statuses and personalities that are all greatly looked upon and judged upon their status and the way the look. In the play, The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare portrays that the appearance of something doesn't declare the value of it, and that physical appearance can often direct a person's life.

Appearance is always something to be judged and assumed by other people. That's why people often make an appearance that's desired of themselves. "Oh, Antonio - I feel convinced I'd be successful if only I had the money to make myself a rival!" (1.1.173-176) Bassanion would only be convinced that he would have a chance with Portia if he shows that he has a "wealthy" status. Someone trying to constantly prove their worth to someone, already guarantees that they have forgotten their own value. One shouldn't go out and look a successful personality and duplicate it. "Consider beauty. You'll see it's often purchased by the ounce." (3.2.88-89) Just like how people have an abnormal amount of plastic surgery or unwillingly attempting to be with people of different status. People try to enhance their appearances to simply impress others and sometimes the change bought for an appearance could either be something drastic or barely changed. Society is already used to the fact that people are always trying to appear better than their actual appearance, which is why there are options like cosmetics to bring satisfaction to the way a person looks. But it all comes to matter if they're trying to be something other than themselves. A person shouldn't even think of changing who they are to seem like something they're not. To reach certain standards a majority of people have shows how much one's self-esteem doesn't satisfy themselves. Changing an image of a person is often a misleading situation and is something that would eventually be revealed later.

However, misleading appearances could often lead to another and unexpectedly guide them to a path they probably would never have gone to if they never changed they way they were. "Appearances can be deceptive. The world is always taken in by ornament. In law, there is no plea, however tainted or corrupt, whose evil cannot be concealed behind a saintly voice." (3.2.75-76) The world is always convinced through appearance, but no matter how much a person is changed, their actual behavior and the way they truly are could never be completely hidden. To be themselves in a world that is constantly trying to make them something else is the greatest accomplishment. But, Bassanio didn't let the noise of others' opinions drown out his inner voice that he wanted to win over Portia and he had the courage to follow his own heart and intuition. "Therefore, gaudy gold, food for Midas, I want none of you. Nor of you, silver, the stuff of common currency. But you, worthless lead, which threatens rather than promises, your plain speaking appeals more eloquence than your rivals."(3.2.101-106) The casket game consisted of one who picked the gold casket and one who chose the silver casket, both explaining what why they thought those caskets were worthy and higher in power. In the lines 101-106 however, it shows that Bassanio chose the casket the would least likely be expected to be chosen. He even mentioned the casket as "worthless" lead and he shows that he clearly didn't choose the casket by the view, but he took a fair chance and choose quite true. This also goes with the stereotype that good and not so good looking people often have contrasting personalities.

One doesn't have to live their life and look the way other people expect them to. As for people absorbed in society, following trends and certain looks are often the choice people go towards. People end up wearing the same things, having the same style, and it all has to do with the way people view each other. When you judge others, you don't define them; you define the type of person that you are, depending on wether you thought of a person as something negative or good. When we often look at a person and from looking at their appearance, anyone could make an automatic assumption of what kind of person they are. But, the thing is, people say to know the story behind them first, but it is kind of difficult when it comes to first impressions, and it does take time before someone could actually tell their background. However, no one should judge someone based on looks nor believe that they should change themselves to live up to certain standards. To sum it all up, the play, The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare, teaches a valuable lesson when it comes to forming opinions or conclusions about a person through appearances and to "choose not by the view, take a fair chance, and to choose quite true" (3.2.131-132)

The Merchant of Venice Essay

Act 1 Scene 3

1. Revisiting the Portia situation, why is the choosing of a man suitable for her out of her hands.
Her father wants her to marry a wealthy man because he wants the best for her and that marrying a rich man will make her wealthy and rich as well.

2. Who is Shylock? What is his importance in the story thus far?
Shylock is a Jew and he's considering on lending Antonio money for Bassanio.

3. What is the agreement Shylock and Antonio come to terms with?
If Shylock doesn't get a pound of Antonio's flesh, then Shylock has to pay Antonio within a month.

4. Would you trust Antonio? Why or why not.
No, it's not exactly sure that his merchandise actually reaches to people because all of his merchandise are on ships.

Reflection Question: Many times people say friends don't make good business partners, or you should never live with your best friends. Why do you think this is so? Is it smart that Antonio and Shylock are doing business together?
Friends are actually good business partners because there's a higher chance of consideration towards one another and that it's more comfortable than with others or unfamiliar people. Antonio and Shylock doing business together could be quite difficult because of their differences like race and religion.

Merchant of Venice Act 1

1. What is the setting of the story? What are the people like, the culture, etc.
16th century Venice, Italy. People are mostly business men and very concerned for each other and close friends.

2. We meet Antonio in the first scene, who exactly is he and what is his worries that he faces early on?
He is a wealthy merchant in Venice and he's not exactly sure what he's worried about, and his friends take on guesses of what he may be worried about like maybe he's worried about his investment out and business ventures or products out in sea that could be in danger or that he could be in love, but Antonio dismisses those guesses.

3. We also meet Bassanio a friend of Antonio, what does he ask of Antonio?
He asks money of Antonio for three thousand ducats (coins) to impress Portia with his "wealth".

4. Portia worries about finding a husband, so what does she decide to do that she thinks will be the best solution to her problem?
All of the men who were mentioned didn't reach up to her expectations or standards. So, if she doesn't find a man good enough for her, she won't marry anyone and live to be a virgin. Portia resolved the problem by asking her maid to place the wine glass on the wrong casket during the casket game, which will help out her worries on finding out a husband.

Merchant of Venice Partner Work w/ Angela

1. Sometimes sadness could come from something that the person was never aware of. People often cry in movies and feel what others feel whenever they witness it. Sometimes we just cry because we feel that it's necessary. It never really seemed strange whenever a person is sad, because everyone is sad at some point, because we're humans. It's just that certain things make certain people react to them and become emotional.

2. Attitudes have changed since that time period. Right now, it isn't technically illegal. As long as the money wasn't received in an illegal way, then lending money for interest is acceptable. Back then, lending money for interest was to be thought differently. But today, it's easier to lend money without others thinking that it's "usury."

3. It's pretty common to judge people based on how they look, and our judgements are usually or likely right. It's not exactly safe to rely or believe every person's word. People would usually believe someone who has the image that they know takes responsibilities seriously. I honestly think it's better to have evidence that the person is actually able to make money or at least have a job that lends them money than giving money who have the lowest chances of returning or paying back. Overall, it is all right with how it is now.

4. Ethnic and religious conflict with love often don't go well together. Ethnic conflict is often because of pickiness and unwillingly desired choice. Religious conflict also takes part by the use of certain rules which limits people in their relationships. Many stories often have these elements as problems that create conflict. This is mainly because these things aren't always cooperative with each other.

Merchant of Venice Anticipation Guide

"Don't rely on outward appearances when making judgements"
Agree. I strongly agree with this statement, mainly because it is true. Appearances of a person could always change drastically or barely, but it never defines how they may act or behave. You can't fully judge a person truthfully of what type of person they are based on looks. Judging on outward appearances is not judging, it's rather ASSUMING.

"Justice is always blind"
Disagree. Justice is blind, but not always. Justice has its ways of showing up in some certain circumstances but it's usually blind. There's never really a fair play for anyone in life, there's always going to be times where things are just unfair. But again, justice may be blind, but not always because there are times and possibilities of having justice

"A brotherly love between two friends can be as strong as an intimate love between man and women"
Agree. First of all, it's not impossible to have a brotherly love as strong as an intimate love. A brotherly love as strong as an intimate love consists of the characteristics that intimate lovers have, like always concerning for each other and such. It's simply a matter of how close of friends they are and how well they get along.

"You can break a promise as long as you have a good excuse"
Agree. As bad as it may sound, there could be an exception to breaking a promise. It all depends on the situation and how important or sincere the promise is. For example, if you promised to not use your phone for a week, but someone collapsed on the street and the initial thought is to call 911. I honestly think it would be better to break a promise than risk someone's health or life. If the promise is witty and the circumstance is urgent, then I honestly think it's not that big of a deal to break the certain promise. Not saying that it's completely fine to break promises, but a person should always stay true to a promise as much as they can.

"Love is blind"
Disagree. Love is never blind, because it's always possible for anyone to be loved (or at least liked). It may seem to some people that love is blind, but it usually depends on the person's experience with love. Everyone is loved by someone (parents, friends, strangers, God *especially because he loves everyone ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE*). Love may seem blind to people who reject it, but there's always something that the person may secretly love or HAD loved. If one has loved before can always love again.

"Stereotypes are often right"
Agree. Stereotypes are OFTEN right, meaning that yes they are usually right, but not always. Stereotypes usually point out on certain groups of people, but the thing is, everyone is individually different and unique, there's never a group of people that are EXACTLY the same. There are always certain characteristics the differentiates a person from another. Though it may seem that the "stereotype" may apply to a majority of the people, there's always going to be at least one person who differs from it.

"An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth is a good motto to live by"
Agree. I agree with this motto because it takes part in fairness. Though it's not bad to take the bigger part in some situations, being generous is never something to avoid doing. Same goes for taking the lesser part in situations, it just all depends on the satisfaction of both sides. As long as both sides are happy with what they're doing, then it's fair not matter what because of being genuinely happy with what they decide.

Research Connections to "Of Mice and Men"

The setting of "Of Mice and Men" really connects and relates to The Great Depression. During The Great Depression, Farmers working on their crops didn't have enough money so they had to abandon their crops which leads a lot of unsold goods.", companies struggled to make money and many did not have jobs. George and Lennie were apparently fired from their last job and had to abandon that ranch and were due work on a different ranch. They also didn't have a lot of money with them, they only had ten dollars and cans full of beans. "After 1935, America started to get back on its feet. There were programs and institutions that helped people get their life back together after The Great Depression." George and Lennie have been dreaming about their dream life on a ranch like having a little house, a couple of acres, some cows and pigs, and a vegetable patch. They are determined to have their dream life and to work hard towards it. Even though the chapters from 1-3 don't make it certain that they will be able to reach their goal, it makes it clear that they've been working towards getting their lives back together and to get back on their feet.

Lennie, as it says in the book, isn't that bright of a person and seems to have to be directed most of the time which kind of points out that Lennie may have an intellectual disability (mental retardation). "The person would be slower to learn other skills like acting around other people". In chapter two, when Curley went into their cabin/room, he kept pressuring Lennie to talk and answer his questions. Lennie didn't know how to act around him so he just kept quiet and had George to do the talking. "The person will have more trouble learning and becoming an independent person depends on how big the disability." Lennie also seems to be slow in learning on what to do, he's not very quick on making decisions so George usually has to instruct him on his actions. Lennie also doesn't does not have much confidence in himself as an independent person, even though his size may seem intimidating, he's mostly dependent on George. The book describes Lennie as a dumb, not bright, and clueless person, that causes a nuisance most of the time, but that he's also a hard worker who never has the means to harm anyone or anything.

Mental Retardation

Mental retardation also known as intellectual disability is a condition diagnosed before age 18. "Someone who has an intellectual disability will have trouble learning and functioning in everyday life." The person won't be able talk or write like other people their age. The person would be slower to learn other skills like acting around other people and getting dressed. The person will have more trouble learning and becoming an independent person depends on how big the disability. "An injured brain or a problem prevents the brain from developing normally because of intellectual disabilities." These problems usually happens during the baby days or before it was born. It's either the baby doesn't get enough oxygen, it's born way too early, or gets a serious brain infection. The main problem is the difficulty of understanding and thinking which can impact their social and practical skills.

If you think you have Mental Retardation(Intellectual Disability), you should be getting these symptoms. These things aren't that noticeable sometimes until your kid reaches a certain age. It could also appear during infancy. So some symptoms of this disorder is talking late or having trouble walking, difficulty remembering things, and behavior problems or tantrums. Sometimes there can also be other effects like seizures, vision problems, and mood disorders, like autism. Things that can help with this disorder is that there's special education for free through the public school system. This also includes preschoolers. For babies and toddlers, they have early intervention programs to work with parents to write an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). It includes speech therapy, family counseling, nutrition services, physical therapy, or training with special assistive devices. When helping a child with this disorder, getting the child involved with activities and talk to other parents that have children with the same situation is good way to help them out.

"A Coney Island Life" 2nd Draft

Life hands you opportunities everyday, and we have the choice to accept it or deny it. When it comes to opportunities deciding whether you're going to do something or not, the thought "if you don't reach your hand out at that moment, there won't be a next time" runs through your mind. Opportunities may seem like a thing to always accept, but there's always something holding you back, and it's the fear of the opportunity not resulting in the way you want it to. In the poem "A Coney Island Life" by James L. Weil, it is telling us that we should take advantage of the opportunities that come to us because our goals and dreams aren't achieved through doing nothing. He makes it focus on what life will take us to if we had no courage to attempt anything, and that it's better have regrets after doing something, rather than not doing anything and regretting it, but also the fact that it doesn't always go as expected.

Every single person's lives does not run smoothly. There are times when it does run smoothly but most of the time it goes through an obstacle every now and then. In Weil's poem, he mentions, "On roller coaster ups and downs".  In this line, Weil explains life for everyone in general. We're all on the same roller coaster that's filled with opportunities that will go through difficulties and achievements. Everyone has a point where they're at the highest at accomplishing their goals and dreams, and a point where they're at the lowest at reaching goals. After that line, he then states, "And seen my helium hopes break skyward without me". It refers to the difficulties and achievements he has made in his lifetime and the times when his hopes and dreams weren't considered achievable. This part of the poem makes you realize that you may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them. From that point of the poem until the end it, clearly states that once his "big dream" didn't go the way he wanted, all of his achievements went to the back of his head as if it didn't matter anymore. These two lines that were mentioned somewhat relates in a close matter. They both focus on having to work for the opportunities that come to you and to work for what you want that opportunity to result in, no matter any sudden circumstances. But these two lines reminds us to also keep in mind that things don't always go the way you expect them to. It also helps us to realize that we have power over our mind and tasks, not outside events, and that you can't really wish for an easy life, but to have strength to endure a difficult one in order to make that opportunity worth something.

Whenever there's a goal, it's obvious that we have to work for it. Weil states, "Now arms filled with dolls I threw so much for" Weil refers this to working incredibly hard at your goal, and unfortunately not reaching it. We all have the mindset full of expectations waiting to happen, and the only way for the "expectations" to happen, we have to make it happen. We all work hard for something we truly want to achieve or have, and we all would get deeply devastated if it doesn't go out well. And because of his lost hopes and dreams, Weil then states, "I take perhaps my last ride on this planet-carousel", meaning that he was planning to completely give up on his dreams because his failures got the best of him. At times, failures can be big enough to convince you that you can no longer achieve anything you set your mind to. The reason why people give up so fast is because they tend to look how far they still have to go, instead of how far they have gotten. We are all confined by walls we build ourselves, only our words matter, so if you say to yourself that you think you can no longer achieve something, you're obviously going to believe yourself. This line refers to everyone, because everybody comes to a point in their life when they want to quit, but it's that actions you do at that moment that determines your future and the outcome of the opportunity you took.

At the very end of his poem, Weil then states, "How many more times round I have to catch that brass-ring-sun before the game is up". This is the main line that has to be focused on, because throughout the poem he's been stating all the troubles he's been through, and this line clearly explains that even though his difficulties were big, he was still planning achieve his goal and dreams. This helps us to train ourselves to put our hopes and dreams as a bigger image in our mind, and to forget all the reasons why our goals wouldn't work and believe the one reason why it will. Being paralyzed by the fear of failure influences us to discard the fate of opportunities that come to us. Weil's poem greatly shapes us to never let the mistakes and disappointments of the past control and direct your future. Regret is always the outcome of every opportunity, dream, hope, and goal that you throw away and give up on. Our choices upon working for our opportunities should not reflect our fears, but our ambitions. Only you have the power to bring yourself to where you want to be later. Every achievement we have accomplished was not by a matter of chance, but the matter of choice -- the choice to either continue working for goals or to give up on our goals. Our dreams aren't something to be waited for, but to be achieved through our opportunities.

Metaphor Poem - I AM A PET DOG

Someone who will understand and support the way you feel,
Always has your back and could tell when your concern is real,
Who listens to you without judging, right or wrong, good or bad,
Someone who reminds you of all the positive qualities you have,
I guess dogs are extremely intelligent creatures with a loyalty unexpectedly strong,
Senses fondness and emotions which paves a way for unbreakable bonds,

Doesn't matter if we look the same or we think alike,
Or because you're a different dog
Or we share different insights,
Not critical or judgemental
Open and free to every person that I meet,
Loyal and trained to be a warm and approachable being,

Interested and curious of everything,
I can't stay in the same place all my life,
What do I do when I'm in a locked cage
and everyone's having adventures outside,
Willing to be out there and experience new things,
but I spend my time listening to human dilemmas, problems, confusion and worries,

Not always obedient, not always following what is told to do,
I sense my own systematic ways, we have our own minds too,
Constantly arguing, having disagreements, dogs bark and dogs fight/bite
In the end it wouldn't matter who was wrong and who was right,
No matter how much I disobey, no matter how much I misbehave,
Don't worry, I'm not going to be the type of dog that runs away.

"A Coney Island Life" Rough Draft

What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything. When it comes to opportunities deciding whether you're going to do something or not, if you don't reach your hand out at that moment, there won't be a next time, and you'll learn how awful that regret can be. It's better to have regrets after doing something, rather than not doing anything and regretting it. In the poem "A Coney Island Life" by James L. Weil, it is telling us that we should take advantage of the opportunities that come to us because our goals and dreams aren't achieved through doing nothing.

You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them. "On roller coaster ups and downs, And seen my helium hopes break skyward without me". It doesn't matter where you start. Only that you begin. You have power over you mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.  Success isn't about being the best, it's about always getting better. You can't really wish for an easy life, but you can wish for the strength to endure a difficult one. You don't have to live your life the way other people expect you to. It is never too late to become what you might have been. No one has the power to shatter your dreams unless you allow them to do so. Make your hopes larger than your fears and your dreams larger than your doubts.  Accept failure, everyone fails at something, but one thing you can't accept is not trying.

Don't let the mistakes and disappointments of the past control and direct your future. "Now arms filled with dolls I threw so much for, I take perhaps my last ride on this planet-carousel". Forget all the reasons why your goals won't work and believe the one reason why it will. If you change nothing, nothing will change. You are confined by the walls you build yourself. Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.  Everybody comes to a point in their life when they want to quit, but it's what you do at that moment that determines who you are. You can't be paralyzed by the fear of failure or you will never push yourself. You are stronger than your challenges and your challenges make you stronger. Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. Never let fear decide your fate.

If you quit now, you will soon be back to where you started. And when you started you desperately wished to be where you are now. When feeling overwhelmed by a faraway goal, remember that you have it within yourself right now, to get you to where you want to be later. Giving up on our dreams is like dying while still alive."How many more times round I have to catch that brass-ring-sun before the game is up". Ask yourself, who do you want to be? Figure out for yourself what makes you happy, no matter how crazy it may sound to other people. Decide you want it more than you are afraid of it. Your choices should reflect your hopes, not your fears. The reason why people give up so face is because they tend to look how far they still have to go, instead of how far they have gotten. Life is simple. Are you happy? Yes? Keep going. No? Change something. Our dreams and goals is not a matter of chance; it is a matter choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, but to be achieved.
